#93 Trammell – Whitaker

With Trammell – Whitaker it comes down to the shear number of G played together, at two key defensive positions.

Using retrosplits we can track the number of games played in together (defined as having at least 1 PA) for pairs of players. This data is based on boxscores and so goes back to 1908. Here’s the top 20, with Trammell – Whitaker at #3.

20 A.Jones C.Jones 1564

Of course none of those pairs had the tight shortstop – second baseman defensive partnership. We can also ask, how many games did they play in where each accomplished some goal – for example each had at least 1 hit or 1 run scored. Here’s the top 20 for that.

We see them get leap-frogged by several of more prolific hitters. Probably the more interesting thing to look at is their double-plays turned together. Here’s the top 10 list of SS – 2B combinations (since 1955), given that a play was a double play, initially fielded by either the SS or 2B .

One of the unique things about the Trammell – Whitaker duo was they contributed solid, above-average, seasons as a pair for such a long period of time. Here I look at the most seasons played together, where the harmonic mean (the inverse of the mean of the inverse – good for making sure both quantities are high) of WAR was above a certain value. I’ll start with harmonic mean above 3 WAR – a good solid well above average season (yes, I cherry-picked 3 to make Trammell – Whitaker #1). Following is the list of pairs with 10 or more such seasons.

1 A.Trammell L.Whitaker 13

15 P.Reese J.Robinson 10
16 R.Santo B.Williams 10
17 T.Perez P.Rose 10
18 Y.Berra M.Mantle 10

Let’s bump that up to a harmonic mean of 4 WAR – we see Trammell – Whitaker still up near the top.

12 T.Lazzeri B.Ruth 9
13 W.Mays W.McCovey 9

Finally let’s look at harmonic mean of 5 WAR – an all-star type season. Trammell – Whitaker only have 4 such seasons that pass that threshold (1983, 1984, 1986, 1987). Nevertheless, the top 9 are interesting, so for the record I’ll go ahead and list them here.
